SAP markets Joule as one assistant across the portfolio. In practice, whether you get it depends almost entirely on which SAP product you run and where it is hosted. That gap between the brand and the entitlement is the single most expensive misunderstanding in SAP AI evaluations right now, and it is the reason this page is organised by edition rather than by feature.

Vendor claims last verified: 5 August 2026. Sourced from press-release wires and trade press (SAPinsider, ERP Today, Constellation Research, CIO Dive, TechTarget). Implementation-partner blogs were excluded as fact sources. Full citation list: docs/ai-content-sources/sap.md.

Executive summary

If you only read one section, read this one.

  • Joule is generally available in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, embedded from roughly Q3 2024 onward.
  • Joule works in S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition from release 2021 and above, but only in SAP-managed data centres. If you host Private Edition in your own data centre, you do not get it.
  • Classic on-premise S/4HANA does not get embedded Joule, and it is not on the published roadmap.
  • SAP Business One has no Joule and no public roadmap indicating it will.
  • Joule Studio's agent builder reached general availability in Q1 2026. Joule Agents went GA across SAP Ariba Intake Management, SAP Ariba Contracts and SAP Fieldglass Services Procurement in June 2026.
  • The bigger agentic pieces are still roadmap. Joule Work, Joule A2A and the Governance Assistant are targeted at Q4 2026. The n8n workflow canvas inside Joule Studio is targeted at Q3 2026.
  • Pricing is consumption-based via AI Units, and unused units expire after 12 months with no rollover. From July 2026 use-based pricing is SAP's default position on cloud renewals.

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaway

Joule availability is an edition question before it is a feature question. Confirm in writing which SAP product, which release, and which hosting model your quote covers before you treat Joule as included.

What SAP actually means by "Joule"

Joule is not one product. Four names get used interchangeably in SAP marketing, and they mean different things commercially.

NameWhat it isStatus (Aug 2026)
JouleThe conversational assistant embedded in SAP applicationsGenerally available in specific editions only
Joule StudioBuilder for custom agents and skills, using MCP and the A2A protocol to call tools and third-party agentsGenerally available agent builder, Q1 2026
Joule AgentsTask-scoped agents that execute steps rather than answer questionsGenerally available per module, rolling
Joule Work / Joule A2AAgent work management and agent-to-agent coordinationAnnounced / roadmap target Q4 2026

SAP also announced SAP Domain Models at Sapphire 2026, a family of SAP-aware foundation models including a second-generation SAP-ABAP-2 coding model plus specialised variants for S/4HANA and Ariba. Treat this as a platform direction, not a feature you can switch on.

Availability by SAP edition: the table that decides your evaluation

This is where most SAP AI business cases quietly fall apart. The Joule brand spans the portfolio; the entitlement does not.

SAP productJoule statusWhat that means in practice
S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition Generally available Embedded from roughly Q3 2024 and in releases since. The strongest Joule story in the SAP portfolio.
S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition Generally available with restrictions Supported from release 2021 and above, but only inside SAP-managed data centres. Customer-hosted deployments are not supported.
S/4HANA On-Premise Not available No embedded Joule, and not on the roadmap for classic on-premise. Indirect routes via BTP have been discussed but are not the same entitlement.
SAP Business One Not available The Business One product page does not advertise Joule and there is no public roadmap for it. SMB SAP customers are outside the Joule story.
SAP Business ByDesign Not available No Joule availability statement found. Largely moot: ByDesign passed its announced April 2026 sunset.

The Private Edition hosting trap

Private Edition customers frequently assume Joule comes with the licence. It comes with the hosting model. If data residency or a sovereignty requirement means you self-host, or your hyperscaler contract sits outside SAP-managed hosting, Joule is not part of the deal. Get this in writing before it becomes an assumption in your business case.

If you are still deciding between the SAP editions themselves, our S/4HANA Public Cloud review and Private Edition review cover the non-AI differences that usually matter more.

What shipped versus what was announced

Vendor keynotes compress a multi-year roadmap into a single narrative. Here is the split as of August 2026.

Shipped and usable today

  • Joule in S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition Generally available
  • Joule in S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, SAP-managed hosting, release 2021+ Generally available
  • Joule Studio agent builder, GA Q1 2026 Generally available
  • Joule Agents across SAP Ariba Intake Management, SAP Ariba Contracts and SAP Fieldglass Services Procurement, June 2026 Generally available

Announced, not yet deployable

  • n8n visual workflow canvas inside Joule Studio, target Q3 2026 Announced / roadmap
  • Joule Work, target Q4 2026 Announced / roadmap
  • Joule A2A (Agent2Agent), target Q4 2026 Announced / roadmap
  • Governance Assistant, target Q4 2026 Announced / roadmap
  • SAP Domain Models including SAP-ABAP-2 Announced / roadmap

Note what this means for the "agentic ERP" narrative: the pieces that make agents coordinate, get governed and manage their own work are the Q4 2026 items. A company signing in 2026 is buying an assistant plus a handful of procurement agents, with the orchestration layer arriving later.

What SAP Joule costs: AI Units explained

SAP prices premium AI either per user per month or by consumption, depending on the feature. The consumption currency is the AI Unit: prepaid credits spent flexibly across SAP cloud services and metered against predefined usage metrics.

Cost scales with model inference. A simple lookup is cheap. Multi-turn conversations and complex reasoning cost materially more, which means your AI bill tracks adoption depth rather than headcount.

AI Units expire after 12 months

This is the commercial term buyers miss most often. AI Units are reported to expire 12 months after purchase regardless of consumption, cannot be rolled over, and unused units are forfeited with no credit. Combined with the difficulty of forecasting first-year AI adoption, over-buying units is a real and non-recoverable cost. Ask SAP to model a low-adoption scenario, not just the optimistic one.

From July 2026, use-based pricing became SAP's default posture on cloud renewals. It is described as a default rather than a mandate, so committed and capped structures remain negotiable. That distinction matters: the opening quote now assumes consumption, and it is on you to push back toward a cap if predictability is worth more to you than flexibility.

For the licence costs underneath the AI layer, see our SAP S/4HANA pricing breakdown or model your own numbers in the TCO calculator.

SAP's 2026 AI deals, and what they actually were

SAP made five significant AI moves in 2026. The deal types differ, and they are widely misreported, so we state them precisely.

n8nInvestment, not an acquisition

Minority investment, roughly 1.3% (~$60M), at a $5.2bn valuation, plus a multi-year commercial agreement.

Announced 12 May 2026

Why it matters: Embeds n8n's visual workflow canvas inside Joule Studio. GA targeted Q3 2026.

ReltioAcquisition

Master data management, to unify and cleanse enterprise data for agentic AI.

Announced March 2026, completed 7 May 2026

Why it matters: Without reconciled master data, agents act on conflicting records. This is the cleansing layer.

DremioAcquisition

Data lakehouse, expanding SAP Business Data Cloud into an Apache Iceberg-native lakehouse.

Announced 4 May 2026, closed 27 July 2026

Why it matters: Widens the data estate agents can reason over to include non-SAP sources.

Prior LabsAcquisition

Frontier AI research team working on tabular foundation models (TFMs).

Announced 4 May 2026, closed 27 July 2026

Why it matters: Supplies models suited to the structured, tabular data ERP actually holds.

ParloaInvestment, not an acquisition

Strategic investment plus partnership, after Parloa's $350M Series D at a $3bn valuation.

Announced May 2026

Why it matters: Voice AI for customer interactions. Holds SAP Endorsed App status.

Read together, the three acquisitions form a data pipeline rather than an AI feature push: Dremio widens the data estate, Reltio cleans and reconciles it, Prior Labs supplies models to reason over it. That is a bet that data readiness, not model quality, is the binding constraint on agentic ERP. It is a defensible bet, and it also means the payoff is a 2027 story rather than a 2026 one.

How SAP's AI maturity compares

Against the two vendors SAP is most often shortlisted alongside:

DimensionSAP JouleMicrosoft Copilot (D365)Oracle Fusion AI
Depth of ERP process integrationStrongest, when you are on a supported editionGood, strongest in the Microsoft 365 workflowGood, embedded in Fusion processes
Availability across own portfolioWeakest. Excludes on-premise, Business One, ByDesignBroad across Business Central and Finance & SCMBroad across Fusion cloud apps

Cost predictabilityLowHighHigh
Custom agent buildingJoule Studio, GA Q1 2026Copilot Studio, matureAI Agent Studio

The honest summary: SAP has the deepest process context and the least predictable commercial model. If your ERP estate is Public Cloud or SAP-hosted Private Edition, Joule is a genuine advantage. If it is on-premise or Business One, SAP's AI story is currently not addressable by you at all, and that should change how you weight AI in the decision. For the head-to-head beyond AI, see SAP vs Dynamics 365.

What to do with this if you are evaluating SAP

  1. Pin the entitlement. Ask which SAP product, which release, and which hosting model your Joule access depends on. Get it in the quote, not the slide deck.
  2. Separate shipped from roadmap. Build the business case on the GA list above. Treat Q4 2026 items as upside.
  3. Model a low-adoption AI Unit scenario. Because units expire unused, the downside of over-buying is real and unrecoverable.
  4. Negotiate a cap. Use-based is now the default opening position, not the only option.
  5. Do not let AI decide the ERP. Functional fit, industry coverage and implementation risk still dominate the outcome. AI capability changes faster than your implementation timeline.

Where AI should sit in your scoring

We do not recommend weighting AI capability heavily in an ERP selection in 2026. The feature sets are moving quarterly, and a decision you make on today's AI comparison may be wrong by go-live. Weight it as a tiebreaker between otherwise comparable finalists, and weight the pricing model more than the feature list, because that is the part you sign for years.
