Overview
SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition is SAP's single-tenant managed cloud ERP offering, marketed under RISE with SAP. Unlike the Public Cloud (multi-tenant, standardized), Private Cloud gives organizations full ABAP extensibility, custom code deployment, and customer-controlled upgrade schedules.
This is the edition for organizations with complex, heavily customized SAP landscapes that can't adopt Public Cloud's standardized approach. It supports brownfield migrations from SAP ECC — carrying over custom developments, modifications, and configurations — while moving infrastructure management to SAP or a hyperscaler (AWS, Azure, GCP).
The On-Premise variant provides the same software on customer-managed infrastructure. However, SAP has signaled that On-Premise receives no new innovations — all future development goes to Cloud editions. On-Premise is now primarily a transition option for organizations planning an eventual move to Private or Public Cloud.
Editions & Pricing Tiers
RISE with SAP (Private Cloud)
Single-tenant managed cloud on hyperscaler. Includes infrastructure, SAP HANA, tools, and support. Full ABAP extensibility.
$250–500/user/mo (bundled)On-Premise
Customer-managed infrastructure. Perpetual or subscription licensing. Full control but no new SAP innovations.
Custom quote (perpetual + maintenance)Key Capabilities
Full ABAP Extensibility
Deploy custom ABAP code, modifications, and enhancements in the core system. No restrictions on ABAP development — critical for organizations with decades of custom SAP code.
Parallel Ledgers (Multi-GAAP)
Universal Journal with up to three independent parallel ledgers. Same financial depth as Public Cloud, plus the flexibility to build custom financial reports and extensions.
Brownfield Migration Support
Migrate from SAP ECC with custom code, configurations, and data intact. System conversion (brownfield) and selective data transition approaches are both supported — Public Cloud requires greenfield only.
Customer-Controlled Upgrades
Choose when to upgrade (within SAP's minimum cadence of every 2 years). Test, validate, and deploy on your schedule — critical for regulated industries and complex landscapes.
25+ Industry Solutions
Deep industry-specific functionality for automotive, aerospace, chemicals, pharma, oil & gas, utilities, retail, and more. The broadest industry coverage of any ERP platform.
Maximum Manufacturing Depth
Full Production Planning (PP), Process Manufacturing (PP-PI), Quality Management (QM), Plant Maintenance (PM), and integration with MES/shop floor systems. The deepest manufacturing capabilities in the market.
Limitations & Considerations
Highest Cost in the SAP Portfolio
RISE with SAP bundles infrastructure, database, and application at $250–500/user/month. Implementation costs of $200K–2M+ and 8–18 month timelines make this the most expensive SAP option. Total investment over 3 years can exceed $5M for large enterprises.
Long Implementation Timelines
Brownfield migrations from ECC typically take 12–18 months. Even greenfield Private Cloud deployments take 8–14 months — 2–3x longer than Public Cloud. The complexity of custom code remediation and testing drives timelines.
No New Innovations for On-Premise
SAP has committed that all new features go to Cloud editions only. On-Premise customers get security patches and legal changes but no functional innovations. This effectively forces an eventual move to Private or Public Cloud.
ECC End-of-Maintenance Pressure
SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ends in 2027 (extended to 2030 with fees). Organizations on ECC must migrate to S/4HANA or accept third-party support — creating urgency that can lead to rushed decisions.
Complex Licensing
RISE with SAP bundles are complex to compare across hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP). Pricing varies by infrastructure tier, user type (Full, Self-Service, Developer), and contract duration. Always request detailed licensing breakdowns.
Module Strengths
Finance & Accounting
Universal Journal, parallel ledgers, automated close, group reporting. Industry-leading depth.
Manufacturing (PP/PP-PI)
Discrete, process, repetitive manufacturing. MES integration. Deepest capabilities in the market.
Quality Management
Full QM with inspection lots, quality certificates, stability studies, LIMS integration. Pharma-grade.
Plant Maintenance
Maintenance planning, work orders, preventive maintenance, technical objects. Deep EAM capabilities.
Materials Management
Procurement, inventory management, batch management, warehouse management (EWM). Best-in-class.
Sales & Distribution
Full order-to-cash: quotations, sales orders, delivery, billing, credit management, output management.
Supply Chain
MRP, demand planning, transportation management (TM), extended warehouse management (EWM).
Project Management
Project systems (PS), WBS elements, network planning. Good but not specialized for services firms.
Human Resources
Basic organizational management. Full HCM requires SAP SuccessFactors (separate license).
CRM
Basic customer master. Full CRM requires SAP Sales Cloud or third-party. Not a CRM replacement.
Business Intelligence
Embedded analytics, CDS views, SAP Analytics Cloud integration, BW/4HANA for enterprise reporting.
Implementation
SAP Activate methodology supporting both brownfield (system conversion) and greenfield approaches. Brownfield preserves custom code and data; greenfield implements from scratch. Both use Fit-to-Standard workshops but Private Cloud allows gap resolution through custom ABAP rather than only BTP extensions.
Implementation Phases
Discover — Assess custom code, plan migration approach (brownfield vs. greenfield)
Prepare — Set up project, provision infrastructure, plan data migration
Explore — Fit-to-Standard workshops, custom code remediation planning
Realize — Configure, develop custom code, migrate data, build integrations

What is RISE with SAP?
RISE with SAP is SAP's managed cloud offering that bundles S/4HANA Private Cloud, infrastructure (on AWS, Azure, or GCP), SAP HANA database, SAP Business Technology Platform, and support into a single subscription. It's designed to simplify the transition from SAP ECC to S/4HANA Cloud by handling infrastructure, upgrades, and security while preserving your custom ABAP code.
Can I keep my custom ABAP code?
Yes — this is the primary reason to choose Private Cloud over Public Cloud. You can deploy custom ABAP, modifications, and enhancements in the core system. SAP provides tools (Custom Code Analyzer, ATC checks) to identify code that needs remediation for S/4HANA compatibility, but the platform fully supports custom development.
How long does a RISE with SAP migration take?
Brownfield migrations from ECC typically take 12–18 months. Greenfield Private Cloud implementations take 8–14 months. The biggest timeline drivers are custom code remediation, data migration volume, integration complexity, and the number of legal entities being migrated.
Should I choose Public Cloud or Private Cloud?
Choose Public Cloud if: you can adopt SAP standard processes, have minimal custom code, want fast deployment (3–6 months), and prioritize lower TCO. Choose Private Cloud if: you have extensive custom ABAP, need controlled upgrade schedules, require deep manufacturing or industry-specific capabilities, or are doing a brownfield migration from ECC.
What happens to SAP On-Premise?
On-Premise continues to receive security patches and legal changes, but SAP has confirmed no new functional innovations. SAP's strategic direction is cloud-first. On-Premise is effectively a transition state — organizations should plan for an eventual move to Private or Public Cloud.
