How to Choose the Right Microsoft Dynamics 365 Partner
Microsoft Dynamics 365 is sold almost exclusively through partners — which means your partner is your first and primary point of accountability. The right one accelerates your implementation; the wrong one can set your project back by 12 months and double your budget.
1. Business Central vs. Finance & SCM — Different Partner Pools
Business Central and Dynamics 365 Finance & SCM are fundamentally different products targeting different segments. Most Business Central partners are smaller, industry-focused shops serving companies with 50–500 users. Finance & SCM partners tend to be larger SIs or Microsoft-aligned boutiques with global delivery capability. Make sure the partner you're evaluating has live references on the exact product you're purchasing — not Dynamics 365 in general.
2. Check Microsoft Solution Partner Designations
Microsoft's partner competency system has evolved into 'Solutions Partner' designations. Look for partners with the Business Applications designation at minimum. Inner Circle and President's Club recognitions indicate top-tier partners who exceed performance and customer satisfaction thresholds — Microsoft's way of flagging their best performers.
3. Evaluate ISV Add-On Expertise
Dynamics 365 Business Central's strength lies partly in its AppSource ecosystem — third-party add-ons for warehousing, manufacturing, payroll, and more. A good partner should know which ISV apps are battle-tested in your industry and which ones carry support risks. Ask explicitly about their experience integrating ISV solutions.
4. Consider the Long-Term Relationship
Dynamics 365 receives two major updates per year. Your partner relationship is not a one-time implementation — it's an ongoing engagement covering upgrades, user training, new module rollouts, and issue resolution. Assess how the partner structures their managed services, what their update testing process looks like, and how responsive they are between projects.
