Overview

⚠️ IMPORTANT: SAP has confirmed that Business ByDesign will be removed from the SAP price list in April 2026. Existing contracts will be honored through their term, but SAP is no longer selling new ByDesign licenses. Current customers should begin migration planning immediately.

SAP Business ByDesign is (was) SAP's multi-tenant cloud ERP designed as a "business suite in a box" for mid-market companies with 20–1,500 users. It covers financials, CRM, HR, supply chain, project management, and procurement in a single integrated solution — more breadth than SAP Business One, less depth than S/4HANA.

ByDesign filled the gap between SAP B1 (SMB) and S/4HANA (enterprise) for companies that wanted SAP's processes and compliance without the complexity or cost of S/4HANA. With the sunset, SAP is consolidating its cloud strategy around S/4HANA Public Cloud (GROW with SAP) for the mid-market.

Editions & Pricing Tiers

SAP Business ByDesign (Standard)

Full suite: financials, CRM, HR, supply chain, project management, procurement, analytics.

$90–140/user/mo

Key Capabilities

Complete Suite in a Box

Financials, CRM, HR, supply chain, procurement, project management, and analytics in one integrated system. No need to buy separate products for CRM or HR — unlike S/4HANA Public Cloud which requires SuccessFactors and Sales Cloud.

Multi-Entity Native

Built-in support for multiple legal entities with intercompany transactions and consolidated reporting. Simpler multi-entity setup than assembling the same from S/4HANA + SuccessFactors + Sales Cloud.

Strong Project Management

Project planning, resource management, time recording, expense management, and project billing. Rated 'Strong' by ERP Research — one of ByDesign's best modules.

SAP-Grade Localization

Certified localizations for 40+ countries. SAP's compliance infrastructure ensures legal reporting, tax calculations, and regulatory compliance are maintained through quarterly updates.

Fast Cloud Deployment

As a standardized cloud solution, ByDesign implementations typically complete in 3–6 months — faster than S/4HANA Public or Private Cloud.

Limitations & Considerations

⚠️ BEING DISCONTINUED — April 2026

SAP has confirmed removal from the price list in April 2026. No new licenses available. Existing contracts honored through term. Expected full wind-down by 2028–2029. Migration planning is urgent.

Jack of All Trades, Master of None

ByDesign covers many areas but lacks depth in any single one. Manufacturing is basic (no process manufacturing). CRM is adequate but not competitive with Salesforce. HR is functional but not SuccessFactors. Deep needs in any area typically require integrating external tools.

Limited Extensibility

Customization options are more constrained than S/4HANA (BTP), D365 BC (Power Platform), or NetSuite (SuiteScript). Organizations with complex custom requirements frequently hit ByDesign's walls.

No Migration Path — It's a Re-Implementation

Moving from ByDesign to any other ERP (including S/4HANA) is a full re-implementation project. There is no automated migration tool. Budget for a complete ERP project, not an 'upgrade'.

Shrinking Partner Ecosystem

As the sunset approaches, ByDesign implementation partners are shifting focus to S/4HANA, D365 BC, or NetSuite. Finding experienced ByDesign partners for new projects or ongoing support will become increasingly difficult.

Module Strengths

Finance & Accounting

Leading

GL, AP/AR, fixed assets, cost accounting, financial close. Strong for mid-market. No parallel ledgers.

CRM

Good

Leads, opportunities, activities, campaigns. Functional but not competitive with standalone CRM tools.

Human Resources

Good

Employee management, time management, payroll integration. More than B1 or S/4HANA core but less than SuccessFactors.

Supply Chain

Good

Demand planning, supply planning, inventory management, warehouse basics.

Procurement

Good

Purchase orders, requisitions, supplier management, invoice verification. Standard mid-market procurement.

Project Management

Leading

Project planning, resource management, time/expense, billing. One of ByDesign's strongest modules.

Manufacturing

Good

BOMs, MRP, production orders. Basic discrete manufacturing. No process manufacturing.

Inventory Management

Good

Multi-warehouse, lot/serial tracking, cycle counting. Adequate for standard inventory needs.

Warehouse Management

Good

Basic warehouse operations. For complex WMS needs, additional tools are required.

eCommerce

Basic

Basic web channel. For full eCommerce, integration with external platforms is needed.

Business Intelligence

Good

Built-in analytics, dashboards, and reporting. Adequate for standard analysis.

Implementation

N/A — no longer available for new implementations. Existing customers follow SAP's standard cloud methodology.

Implementation Phases

Partner ecosystem: Shrinking. Partners are transitioning to S/4HANA Public Cloud, D365 BC, or NetSuite. Finding experienced ByDesign-specific partners will become increasingly difficult.

AI & Innovation

Limited — ByDesign did not receive SAP's latest AI investments (Joule, Business AI). AI capabilities are basic compared to S/4HANA or D365 BC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SAP Business ByDesign being discontinued?

Yes. SAP confirmed ByDesign will be removed from the SAP price list in April 2026. No new licenses are being sold. Existing contracts are honored through their term. Current customers should begin migration planning immediately — expected full wind-down by 2028–2029.

What should ByDesign customers migrate to?

SAP's recommended path is S/4HANA Public Cloud (GROW with SAP) — stays in the SAP ecosystem. Other strong options: Oracle NetSuite (similar breadth, strong multi-subsidiary), D365 Business Central (Microsoft ecosystem, lower cost), or Odoo (budget-friendly). All migrations are full re-implementations — there is no automated upgrade path from ByDesign to any system.

How long do I have before ByDesign is shut down?

Existing contracts are honored through their term. The expected wind-down timeline is: April 2026 (removed from price list), 2026–2028 (existing contracts run, quarterly updates continue), 2028–2029 (expected end of support). Start planning now — ERP migrations take 4–9 months.

Can I migrate my ByDesign data to S/4HANA?

Your data can be extracted and migrated, but there is no automated migration tool. It's a re-implementation: new configuration, data mapping, data cleansing, testing, and training. Budget for a full ERP project (typically $100K–$400K for mid-market), not a simple 'upgrade'.
