SAP S/4HANA On-Premise

Maximum control, maximum responsibility — SAP's full-scope ERP on your own infrastructure with perpetual licensing.

On-PremiseLarge enterprise

Überblick

SAP S/4HANA On-Premise is the self-managed deployment option for SAP's flagship ERP suite. Organizations run the full S/4HANA application on their own data centers (or self-managed IaaS), controlling every layer of the stack: operating system, SAP HANA database, application server, patching, upgrades, and security. Unlike Private Cloud (RISE with SAP), On-Premise uses a perpetual license model with 22% annual maintenance fees. This gives organizations full ownership of their software investment but requires significant internal IT capability to operate. There are no restrictions on ABAP customization, modifications, or third-party add-ons. However, SAP has committed to a cloud-first innovation strategy. On-Premise receives security patches, legal updates, and bug fixes — but no new functional features. All innovation (Joule AI, new Fiori apps, embedded analytics improvements) is delivered exclusively to Cloud editions. On-Premise is now effectively a transitional deployment for organizations planning an eventual move to Private or Public Cloud.

Zentrale Stärken

Full Infrastructure Control

Own and manage every layer: hardware, OS, database, application server, network, and security. Deploy in your own data center, co-location facility, or self-managed IaaS. No dependency on SAP-managed services.

Data Sovereignty & Air-Gapped Environments

Keep all data on-premise with no cloud connectivity required. Ideal for defense, government, and highly regulated industries that prohibit data leaving specific jurisdictions or require air-gapped operation.

Perpetual Licensing

Own the software license as a capital asset. Pay 22% annual maintenance for support and patches. No subscription lock-in — the license remains yours even if you stop paying maintenance (though you lose support and updates).

Unlimited Customization

No restrictions on ABAP modifications, kernel-level changes, or third-party add-ons. Modify any standard SAP code, deploy custom enhancements without side-car restrictions, and integrate at any layer of the stack.

Full ABAP Stack with Complete Access

Direct access to SAP HANA database, OS-level commands, file systems, and all transport layers. Run background jobs, custom reports, and batch processing with no platform-imposed limitations.

No Forced Upgrades

Upgrade on your own schedule — or not at all. There is no minimum upgrade cadence (unlike Private Cloud's 2-year requirement). Critical for organizations with strict change management and validation requirements.

Bekannte Einschränkungen

No New Innovations from SAP

SAP has committed to a cloud-first strategy. On-Premise receives only security patches, legal changes, and bug fixes. All new features — Joule AI, advanced analytics, new Fiori apps, process automation — are exclusive to Cloud editions. This gap widens with every release cycle.

Highest Total Cost of Ownership

Beyond the license fee and 22% maintenance, you bear all infrastructure costs: servers, storage, networking, OS licenses, database administration, backup, disaster recovery, and a skilled SAP Basis team. Total 3-year TCO for 200 users can exceed $10M when all costs are included.

Longest Implementation Timelines

On-Premise implementations typically take 12–24 months. Infrastructure procurement, network setup, security hardening, and environment provisioning add months before functional configuration even begins. Brownfield migrations from ECC are especially time-intensive.

Full Self-Management Burden

You are responsible for database administration, OS patching, security monitoring, performance tuning, backup/restore, disaster recovery, and high availability. This requires a dedicated SAP Basis team of 2–5+ FTEs depending on landscape complexity.

Forced Migration Eventually

SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ends in 2027 (extended to 2030 with fees). While On-Premise S/4HANA has no announced end date, the innovation freeze and SAP's strategic direction make an eventual cloud migration likely. Organizations should plan for this transition.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is the difference between S/4HANA On-Premise and Private Cloud?
Both run the same S/4HANA software with full ABAP extensibility. The key differences: On-Premise uses perpetual licensing and you manage all infrastructure (servers, database, OS, patching, upgrades). Private Cloud (RISE with SAP) is a managed subscription where SAP handles infrastructure on a hyperscaler. Critically, Private Cloud receives all new innovations while On-Premise only gets security patches and legal updates.
Is SAP still selling On-Premise licenses?
Yes, SAP continues to sell S/4HANA On-Premise perpetual licenses as of 2026. However, SAP actively steers customers toward RISE with SAP (Private Cloud). On-Premise receives no new innovations, and SAP's long-term strategy is cloud-first. New customers should consider On-Premise only if they have a strict regulatory or security requirement that prohibits cloud deployment.
Will SAP eventually end On-Premise support?
SAP has not announced an end-of-support date for S/4HANA On-Premise. However, the innovation freeze is a clear signal. On-Premise will continue receiving security patches and legal changes, but the functional gap compared to Cloud editions grows with every release. Organizations should build a cloud migration roadmap even if they deploy On-Premise today.
How does On-Premise TCO compare to Private Cloud?
On-Premise TCO is typically 20–40% higher than Private Cloud when all costs are included: hardware/hosting, OS licenses, database administration, Basis team salaries, backup/DR infrastructure, and security monitoring. The perpetual license appears cheaper upfront, but the hidden operational costs are substantial. Private Cloud bundles most of these into the RISE subscription.
Can I migrate from On-Premise to Private or Public Cloud later?
Yes. SAP supports brownfield migration from On-Premise to Private Cloud (preserving custom code) and selective data transition to Public Cloud (requires process standardization). Many organizations use On-Premise as an interim step — migrating from ECC to S/4HANA On-Premise first, then moving to Private Cloud when ready. SAP offers commercial incentives for customers converting perpetual licenses to RISE subscriptions.
